2011 Fall Schedule of Events

October 7       10:00 a.m.

Jeff Moore, Chief Conservator, The Preservation Society of Newport County

Conservator’s Roundtable: Asian Lacquer

For hundreds of years, lacquer has been used to decorate screens, objects, furniture and interior spaces.  These fragile surfaces present a challenge for the conservators who study, analyze and preserve these highly treasured works of art. A series of lectures by an international panel of experts will focus on the history and conservation of Asian lacquer surfaces.

The Preservation Society's Jeff More and Maria João Petisca will present an update on the work being done on the 18th century Chinese lacquer panels from The Elms Breakfast Room. Guest lecturers will include Silvia Miklin, a lacquer and metals conservator in Vienna;  Marianne Webb, a conservator specializing in the treatment of lacquer; and Arlen Heginbotham, Objects Conservator at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.

Admission is free, but space is limited and advance registration is required.  Please call (401) 847-1000, ext. 154.

Conservation of the Salem Towne House

The New England Conservation Association will host a meeting at Old Sturbridge Village in Sturbridge, MA on Saturday, December 3rd beginning at 12:30 pm. The museum is closed that day so please meet Vice President of Programming, Edward Hood, at the Visitor Center / museum entrance (with the banner "To The Village"). Late comers will not be able to enter the museum so please be prompt - Ed will be there by 12:15.

Hood will take us on an approximate 11/2 hour walking tour of museum landscape and buildings. Touring OSV through Ed's eyes while empty of other visitors is a treat!

At 2 pm NECA members will gather at the Federal period, Salem Towne House.

At the Towne House we'll look at and discuss the challenge of conserving the painted mural in the ballroom. Presently, plaster is delaminating, paints are spalling and stains mar the surface. Some testing and analysis is completed. Conservators: David Dempsey, John Vaughn, Kate Chavez, David Colglazier, and Marylou Davis will present background information on the murals.

Discussion is solicited regarding philosophy and ethics and effective treatment approach. We will end at 3:30 pm.

FYI - At OSV that evening, a Christmas by Candlelight program starts at 4:00, which is a fun event for the whole family. Go to the link below for program and ticket information:   http://www.osv.org/activities_events/event_calendar_more.html?ID=614&DateID=1813
